Staring at a man may make him more apt to show off and take on more physical risks. According to a report in Social Psychological and Personality Science,  men had a 39% increase in testosterone levels and took more risks than when they weren’t being watched by women while doing physical activity.  It is an innate mechanism that is aimed at attracting mates and intimidating other men.

This very well could explain the theory behind the need for cheerleaders for sports teams.
